About the arbitrariness and the acceptance of its cold hug or its blow, as i believe to have referred to it before (artistic activity as if it were a boat in the wind, not bad at all, but destiny and direction required) is Roxy Paine´s work about.
I´ve just taken the first contact with his work, but I must admite that I´m only interested in a few pieces of him. The main part of the body of his work and also the one he´s recognised by, metal trees or the plants/mushrooms installations are ellegant but overdesigned and repetitives (quiete boring indeed)
What insterests me about his work is the collection of paint strokes serie, on a framed glass are arranged many brushstrokes. In a pale colour, some of them are straw-colored, others of a pale pink: Just shape, quantity, direction and strength. They are numbered and catalogued as if they were a butterflyes collection.
That serie es from 1997 and 1998, just in the middle of the postmodern hangover, when people asked themselves again: «What am i doing in here?» And the critical analysis came wondering one more time about the creative process. That mate kept wondering himself methodically for very short, but with a few good constructions.
I like, also, another part of his work that relates him with some postminimal postures, as the ones of Barry le Va or Eva Hesse´s, in which the process becames in the aesthetic body and the theoretical discourse. Digitally produced in Paine´s work, by the way, we were reaching 2000!
